Standout Room: Avalon Acoustics, Basis Audio, Benz-Micro, Koetsu, Accuphase, Aesthetix, Graham Engineering, Acrotec

The sounds of analog ruled in this standout room assembled by John Barnes of Audio Unlimited in Colorado. It quickly became one of Greg Weaver's favorites. The Basis Debut Vacuum Mark V turntable, priced at $10,600, was fitted with the Graham Engineering 2.0 tonearm, which lists for $3000, and the $5,500 Koetsu Rosewood Signature Platinum cartridge. This front-end was passed to the $5,000 Aesthetix Io phono stage, the $14,000 Accuphase C-290 preamp, and then the astounding Accuphase M-2000 mono amps, at $27,000 a pair. The beautifully appointed and coffee-table-sized 2,000-watt monoblocks drove the Avalon Acoustics Eidolon loudspeakers, which retail for $19,500 a pair. All cables and interconnects were from Acrotec. This system was certainly meant for the well-healed customer; the results were lush and vivid.
